IBM program shows ‘cash for chunkers’ pays dividends

An article in USAToday shows that IBM employees who participated in a program to improve health-related habits showed definite improvement when the company offered money as a reward. I know what you’re thinking: duh. IBM actually doing this and releasing the results is fantastic because it shows that people can make improvements. I’ve long been saying that medical professionals and public health workers should start appealing to people’s vulgar motivations: for example, breast-feeding proponents should be promoting breast-feeding as a weight loss method, not a cancer prophylactic. However, just giving people money is an even better idea.
